📐 Stage 1 Instructions • Baseline Data & Calculation Setups

The Givens Table & Calculations

Open Stage 1 (HRM Rent Math). Look at The Givens Table on the left side of your screen. Use the built-in Civic Calculator (Alt+C) or your Chromebook calculator.

📋 The Givens Table
Official Baseline Data
• Halifax Rent: $1,938 / month (CMHC)
• NS Minimum Wage: $16.75 / hour
• CMHC Affordability: ≤ 30% of pay
• Full-Time Work: 40 hrs/wk (~$2,900/mo gross • 2,080 hrs/yr)
Read from left panel
🧮 Calculation Formulas
The 3 Questions (a, b, c)
(a) Labor Clock:
$1,938 ÷ $16.75 = ~115.7 hrs
(b) Paycheck Share:
($1,938 ÷ $2,900) × 100 = ~66.8%
(c) Living Wage:
($1,938 ÷ 0.30 × 12) ÷ 2,080 = $37.27/hr

✍️ Civic Analysis
Answer All 3 Boxes!
• Box 1 (Gap): Subtract $16.75 from (c) → $20.52/hr wage gap.
• Box 2 (Life at 25): Describe real compromises (roommates, living with family, multiple jobs).
• Box 3 (Policy vs Budget): Can budgeting alone close an 116-hr gap, or is this a structural government policy issue?
3 Individual Textboxes
💥 Phase 2 • The Reveal • Check Your Math Against Reality
One month of rent = ~116 hours of minimum-wage work.
An "affordable" rent requires ~$37.27 / hour — more than double minimum wage.
→ If you calculated ~116 hrs and ~$37/hr, your math matches reality. That gap is why so many 25-year-olds cannot move out.

4 Units / Lot
By Right

HRM Zoning Amendment
⚡ Stage 1 Part 3 • The Council Dilemma: Commit & Defend

The Council Fight: Go Further?

HRM already legalized 4 units per lot. Council is under pressure to allow 8-unit apartments everywhere. Pick your stance, cite real evidence, and acknowledge the downside.

🌍 Stage 2 Instructions • The Global Halifax Cost of Living Challenge

Halifax vs The World on Numbeo

Open Numbeo.com (click the link in Stage 2). CRITICAL: Set the currency dropdown to Canadian Dollars (CAD) before collecting data!

Delhi, India (Items 1–2)
Food & Water Disparity
Look up an inexpensive restaurant meal and a 1.5L bottle of water. Notice the extreme price gap between Halifax ($25 meal) and Delhi (~$4.50 CAD).
Enter in CAD
Toronto, Miami & Geneva
Rent, Tech & Property

Items 3 to 6
1-Click Math Helper
The "Calc %" Button
Once you enter both prices, click "Calc %" next to each row. The system computes whether Halifax is 200% higher or 40% lower automatically!
Instant Percent Calculation
⚖️ Stage 2 Part 2 Instructions • Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)

Why Raw Prices Are Deceptive

A meal in Delhi costs only $4.50 CAD, but average local wages are much lower. Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) measures how many hours of work it takes to survive.

The PPP Challenge Steps:
1. Type your target career (e.g. Graphic Designer, Welder, Paramedic) and enter its starting salary.
2. Click "Compute PPP Hours" to calculate how long you work for a meal in Halifax vs someone in Delhi.
3. In the analysis box, explain why assuming life in Delhi is "cheap" is a tourist misunderstanding!
The Halifax Worker
At $25/hr, a $25 meal takes 1.0 hour of work. Even at minimum wage ($16.75), it takes ~1.5 hours of labor.
The New Delhi Worker
Average monthly salary in Delhi is ~$850 CAD (~$5.10/hr). A meal takes a much larger chunk of daily survival!
