10:38 PM. TUESDAY.
Sam's phone buzzes against the math textbook — the one that is supposed to be open. Once. Then four times in a row, which means the group chat, not a text.

Chloe: wild. okay cool.
Jayden: @everyone new rule tomorrow: Rae is officially ghosted. Nobody talks to them. Nobody sits with them at lunch.
Jayden: @Sam u sit next to Rae every single day in Homeroom.
Jayden: Tomorrow morning: you sitting with Rae, or sitting with us?
Chloe: silence is an answer sam 🐍

Sam was on the other end of that direct message. Sam knows the screenshot is real. Rae sent it last Thursday night while crying after getting excluded from the weekend tournament group. It was never meant for forty people.
The typing bubble appears under the chat. Disappears. Appears again.
Downstairs, a floorboard creaks — Mom's second lap of the kitchen. Phones-after-10:30 is a revoked-charger offense, and Sam's charger is already on probation.
The phone buzzes again.
Jayden: 30 seconds sam. pick your table.
Sam's chest goes tight and hot at the same time. There are no teachers in a group chat at 10:38 PM, and no adult on earth can stop thirty kids from turning their shoulders away in a cafeteria. Walk into Homeroom and sit with Rae, and Sam is radioactive for the rest of Grade 8. Walk past Rae to Jayden's table, and Sam personally executes their best friend in public.
Two of those moves start a chain reaction. One of them stops one.
Thirty seconds. The thumb hovers over the keyboard.
