Quiz 1 Study Sheet — Sleep, Screens & The Hook Machine

Healthy Living 9 • Outcome 1 • Quiz next class: 15 items, 25 pts, one full Morgan scenario

YOU WALK OUT WITH THE 5%

Part A-B Prep: Sleep MathLT-A • SHOW WORK = POINTS

Weekly debt = (9.0h target − actual) × 5 days
Morgan: (9.0 − 5.5) = 3.5 × 5 = 17.5h
Midpoint = bedtime + (total sleep ÷ 2)  •  Jetlag = weekend midpoint − weekday midpoint
Worked: wkday 10:30pm→6:30am = midpoint 2:30am. wkend 1:00am→10:00am = midpoint 5:30am. Shift +3.0h = 🔴 RED (green <1.0h, red >2.0h)
Reaction time after sleep loss: rested × 1.25 (+25%)
Isaiah: 0.28s × 1.25 = 0.35s — slower. Minutes→decimals: 15min = 0.25h, 45min = 0.75h. Caffeine half-life ≈ 5h (halves each ~5h; blocks adenosine — masks tiredness, no energy).

The Hook Machine (taught today)LT-C • ON THE QUIZ

1. THE PINGnotification, boredom — the bait that pulls you in
→
2. THE SWIPEthe scroll: one lazy thumb flick, zero stopping cues
→
3. THE "MAYBE"slot machine payoff: 9 boring clips, 1 gold clip — your brain gambles on the next swipe
→
4. THE LOCK-INstreaks, likes, history train tomorrow's feed so it's harder to leave
Infinite scroll = invented by Aza Raskin (2006), who later said apps sprinkle "behavioural cocaine" on your interface, and that "a thousand engineers" work to make each screen maximally addicting. The "Maybe" (variable reward) = unpredictable payoff — your brain gets hooked on guessing "maybe", not the videos themselves (same as slot machines). Attention economy = your attention is the product being sold.

All 10 Clinic CasesLT-B • NAME CASE + CONCEPT

DevonChronic weekday debt — the catch-up myth
PriyaDisciplined routine — the healthy baseline
MarcusWeekend freefall — circadian misalignment

🔒 Cover-and-self-quiz tonight (2 min):
  1. Morgan's 5-day debt, showing the formula?
  2. All 4 stages of the Hook Loop in order (Ping → Swipe → "Maybe" → Lock-In) — and which stage is the "slot machine"?
  3. Which case is a structural constraint — and why isn't it "their fault"?
  4. Midpoint shift of +3.5h — green, yellow, or red? Why?
  5. Jenna: in bed 9h, asleep 6h — what do we call the missing 3h, and which loop stage ate it? (The "Maybe" / swipe)
